Caelan Doris Included in Ireland Team But McCarthy Misses Out
Newly reappointed manager Andy Farrell has selected skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish squad for the fall Tests, but Joe McCarthy is absent.
Doris, absent from play since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, but it remains unclear if he will be fit to play against New Zealand in the US on November 1.
Lock Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue he sustained during the first Lions match against Australia in July.
Ulster forward Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster winger Nash are also absent due to injury, while number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after having hip surgery following the Lions tour.
Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped player in the 34-player group, but Irish rugby authorities says new provincial duo Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Bolton will travel to the US as "backup".
Following facing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a repeat of their 2016 meeting, Ireland host Japan, the Wallabies and world champions South Africa in the Irish capital.
"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced players and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said Farrell, back to Ireland duty after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.
In a largely familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will again compete for the first-choice number 10 position. The fly-half role is remains available, with Prendergast and Crowley set to face off for the first occasion in the upcoming URC game at the Dublin venue.
Frawley is the additional fly-half selected with the coach deciding not to calling up the province's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer Test victories over Georgia and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.
Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced group of midfield choices. Osborne is a further choice in the centres, but the 23-year-old is also a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at number 15.
Outside backs Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the only new addition in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has started two of Leinster's three league matches so far and featured in the second string's loss by the English in Bristol earlier this year.
McCarthy was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a cap.
Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, and experienced Ulster lock Henderson is back after missing the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions matches during the tour, is poised to cover for Doris should the captain does not regain full fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.
The national team will assemble in Dublin on Monday before flying to the US on the following day.
