For the sixty-fourth major expansion since its launch, Fallout 76 is preparing to introduce its largest expansion yet this December. Named Burning Springs, this comprehensive update will introduce additional firepower, additional quests, and take players to the previously unexplored area of the Ohio wasteland.

A Notable Evolution

At one point, the concept of Fallout 76 getting such a significant update multiple years after release would have seemed highly unlikely. At the time the multiplayer game initially debuted in 2018, it was met with skepticism from reviewers and gamers who found the early build problematic and conceptually incomplete. Many believed it would suffer the same fate as similar online attempts of that time.

We've just always had faith in this experience, commented the creative director. Our launch was kind of like the opening act of our journey. People come out and they don't see much content, and they become familiar with their world. Our approach was just staying focused and continuing to produce the experiences that we know our players will appreciate, and that we would want to experience.

Venturing Into Fresh Ground

The new content represents the biggest ever update to date. The most significant aspect is the geographical extension, allowing players to cross the border into the Ohio region and explore what circumstances have occurred there. Heads up: Trouble awaits!

The designers explained that venturing into a new state after extended time in the original setting presented an perfect chance to develop an new setting within the Fallout lore.

We had not thoroughly investigated Ohio in the game's history too much, explained the creative director. From our current map, if you move east, you start approaching the Washington DC area. We've explored quite familiar. The Ohio territory was developed extensively. Accordingly, this installment being set earliest in the timeline gives us various storytelling options. Let's see what's happening in this new region!

Drawing Inspiration from Previous Games

What immediately surprises about the game's version of Ohio is that it's developed as a desert wasteland. This may look unusual given the actual geography of the region, but there's a strategic rationale for this creative choice: The aesthetic was significantly drawn by the Capital Wasteland and the Mojave Desert.

Instead of exactly duplicating elements from those games, the designers prioritized representing the essential spirit of those titles within this update.

Our approach wasn't focused on looking at those games and saying we must have particular aspects, stated the creative director. The objective aimed to accomplish was taking the distinct tone of those classic experiences and ensuring it accurately reflected in Burning Springs. The direction I instructed the designers when we started development on the new region was: It must include desert environments, Deathclaws, and numerous raiders. From my perspective, that captures what Fallout 3 and the Vegas title represent. Those are the key components that establish the unique atmosphere of those titles, and so I aimed to have that recreated here.

Streaming Adaptation Integration

The popularity of the live-action adaptation created a noticeable surge in community activity for Fallout 76, with reports indicating a six or seven fold increase. The studio understood they needed to utilize this circumstance, but were without the adequate schedule to execute a complete integration immediately.

The approach came through organic development when the creators identified the natural intersection with The Ghoul, who serves as a bounty hunting NPC within the new expansion.

We were establishing what this new region would include, what the characteristic feel would be, and then what the hallmark aspect of the expansion area would become, that's bounty hunting, commented the development lead. So who more appropriate to represent such activities than Walton Goggins? He being a enthusiastic player of the series too, he was quite willing to partner with us and achieve this integration. So it wasn't originally from the onset, but it developed through logical evolution of the content.

Additional Content

Burning Springs isn't the concluding major update for the multiplayer experience. The development team is currently developing on the initial major 2026 update and planning additional content continuing as far as the 72nd update.

There was a moment where we never thought there would ever be an seventy-sixth expansion, commented the development lead. Currently we are at a phase where things are so great, for both the show and the game. It's truly quite remarkable to consider that there's an that milestone that could potentially coincide with, as you might imagine, whatever comes next!
