The nation on course to elect woman prime minister in historic first

In the past twenty years, the country has had more than 10 leaders.

Actually, one expert likens assuming the nation's top job to taking a "cursed cup".

However, what is the reason does the country keep changing prime ministers? This is partly because of it being a "single-party system", explains Prof James Brown of Temple University in Japan.

The LDP's grip on the political landscape means the primary rivalry originates inside the party, instead of from opposition groups.

"So within the LDP there are intense conflicts within different factions - they all desire their own faction to get the leadership position."
"Thus although you could be selected as leader, the moment you're in office, you have dozens of people manoeuvring to try to remove you again."

Main Reasons Behind Rapid Turnover

  • Single-party rule restricts outside challenges
  • Party infighting drive leadership contests
  • The prime minister's position is frequently called a "cursed position"
  • Political stability remains difficult to achieve despite economic strength
